Buddy list only display icons but not the user list
this happens when you upgrade a previous version of QuickIM and didn't remove the application first. When you don't remove first the old version of QuickIM, and if the database structure changed, there may be some conflicts. The solution is to always delete first the old version of QuickIM prior to installing the new version (you can use Uninstal Manager to clean all the files associated to QuickIM including any in Card).
The other solution is to check the incoming/outgoing checkboxes under Menu -> Options -> Mapping UTF Convertors.
