Can you explain a little more on how to get to app to work in background and not close my connection to do so

Do not close/exit the application. Instead open the contextual menu (clicking the wheel), you'll see a "Background" entry in most menus, clicking on it will leave the application running in background

In the settings/general settings menu, make sure popup from background is checked so you get a popup on new messages

When QuickIM is running in background mode, you will have new message popups only if there is a new message in an existing chat room.

When a new chat room is opened, the buddy list window is displayed. In order to see who sent you a message, you need to open the chat rooms list using the "Chat list" menu item.
