Because with the products that are using a proxy server approach (multi-netwok ones, wap based messengers), the messenger software has to first send your messages to a proxy server owned by the software vendor, which then forwards the messages to the instant messaging network . Consequently your messages can be observed easily at the proxy server level. QuickIM doesn't use this approach.

Even if most of the time, confidentiality may not be critical to you, the proxy server also makes the instant messaging services more fragile, because if for whatever reason the proxy server is down or loses its connection to the public messaging network, all instant messaging software that relie on it will instantly stop working. Most proxy-based instant messaging software use a polling mechanism to look for new messages (the software sends every few seconds a message to the server to ask if there is anything new to read). This means new message delivery is not instantaneous, and wireless network bandwidth cost is much higher because of unnecessary network traffic generated by the polling mechanism (on some devices you can observe the network activity icon flashing very often). A proxyless messenger will be a little slower to connect, but once connected will be much less bandwidth consuming, you pay only for the messages sent and received but not for all the polling messages.
