Requirements

  • J2ME MIDP 2.0 or MIDP 1.0 with socket API extension
  • MSN passport account or native hotmail account
  • Full web internet gprs connection (as opposed to wap gprs), w-cdma or umts connection. It is usually available as an option from your mobile operator as a "data option" such as 5Mb monthly internet data transfer option. On some devices, you can automatically configure your GPRS profile using online tools, on other devices, you can manually configure settings.

Navigation guidelines

QuickIM J2ME and Communicator editions (Universal Edition) have been designed especially to fully profit from a user friendly navigation using only the up, down, left, right and center keys of your navigation pad as well as the buttons located on the left and right sides of the navigation pad.

The following sections will inform you about a few principles for you to navigate easily within commands available on your QuickIM messenger software.

Accessing and navigating through the main Menu

The main menu displays after launching your QuickIM software.

To select a menu option you need to:

» Use the up and down arrows of the navigation pad to scroll the list up and down

» Once the required menu option is highlighted you can select it by pressing once the center key of your navigation pad

After connection to the network, you may come back to the main menu.

  1. From the contact list, click Close
    » A window opens asking you to confirm disconnection from the server.
  2. Select Options/Yes to confirm or press twice the center key of your navigation pad

Navigating Through Options (Features)

Options are always available from the contact list window at the bottom left side of the screen. The Options list can be displayed using the Options button located on the left of the navigation pad.

To select a command/option from the list you need to:

» Use the up and down arrows of the navigation pad to scroll the list up and down

» Once the required option is highlighted you can select it by:
pressing once the center key of your navigation pad
or,
pressing the Select button located on the left side of the navigation pad

» press the center key of your pad once more to select the option or command.

Navigating through different zones displayed on a window.

On a given screen, there might be several areas to be edited with text and/or feature options to be selected.

»You can switch from one area to another by scrolling through the screen using the arrows of your navigation pad.
» Once a required area is highlighted you can edit using keyboard
» Once a required option is highlighted you can select it by pressing the center key of your navigation pad

Back, Cancel, Ignore, No and Close commands

Back, Cancel, Ignore, No and Close commands will display at the bottom right side of the screen and can be activated using the selection button of your pad located on the right side of the navigation pad.

Exit command

The Exit will close the application and disconnect you from the network.

License Activation (Registration)

The registration process can be done only after purchasing the software and receiving your activation key by e-mail.

To activate your software, you need to:

  1. Launch your QuickIM messenger
    » The Registration key window opens, asking you to register your software or continue with the trial version
  2. Select Options/Register
  3. Enter the key you have received by e-mail.

Setting up / Editing your IM account

QuickIM enables you to either connect to the MSN network or to your corporate network if your company uses QuickIM server.
When using your QuickIM for the first time, you need to enter your user account before connecting to the network of your choice.
Eventually, you may also need to edit your user account when switching to another network and everytime your user account has been changed (MSN or corporate user account).

To enter or edit your IM user account:

  1. On the main Menu, select Edit Account
  2. Enter the user name* and password you usually use on the msn network or on your corporate IM network, depending on the network you are connecting to:
  • If connecting to the MSN network, your user name must be either an msn passport login or native hotmail address (e.g. john_d@hotmail.com or Linda@msn.com)
  • If connecting to your corporate network, you will need to enter here the user name and password provided by your company’s network administrator.

Signing in and Common errors

In order to connect, you must have previously set up your IM account. I you have not done it yet, read the set up account section.

  1. On the main Menu, select Connect
    » A window opens asking you to confirm connection to the server
  2. Click Options/Yes or Double-click the center key of your navigation pad
  3. You may be asked to allow QuickIM to use the net in order to send/receive data. If so, click Yes.
  4. 4: You are then asked to select an access point for data transfer. Scroll through the list to select the access point (e.g. web gprs) according to the data transfer option you have*

*Note: names of data transfer options vary depending on your mobile network operator. If you don’t know it, you should refer to your subscription contract or contact your operator’s customer service.

If you get the following message "Error while connecting. Your network connection may not be available temporarly. Please, close the application and retry later. Err:Dispatch server error: Address=messenger.hotmail.com, Port= -1 Details: Create socket: Permission = javax.microedition.io.Connector.socket

try the following first:

configure the proxy settings in QuickIM: launch QuickIM, select settings/Server settings, then make sure to check "Use login server proxy" and "Use default", save the options and restart QuickIM.

If you still get an error message, you can either verify your TCP settings (ask your mobile carrier to get latest up to date information), and Read this

Checking your connection status and reconnecting to the network

Once connected, you can always check your connection status:

From the contact list window, select Status
» You can view your username and connection status.

If connected you can continue chatting.

If disconnected, you may want to reconnect:

  1. From the contact list window, select Options/Settings
  2. Under ‘Reconnect if disconnected’, select Yes
  3. Select Options/Save or press twice the center key of your navigation pad
    » A window opens asking you to save your settings.
  4. Select Options/Yes or press twice the center key of your navigation pad

Using communication features

Start a chat session

If you are just starting out with your messenger software, you first need to add contacts into your contact list (See Add/Remove a contact from your list).

  1. Select a contact from your contact list
  2. Select Options/New Chat
  3. Press twice the center key of your navigation pad to access the ‘Message’ window
  4. Enter your message
  5. Select Options/Send or press twice the center key of your navigation pad

Include emoticons in your message

The smiley option is only available from the ‘Message’ window (See Start a Chat session):

  1. Click Options/smiley
  2. Select a smiley from the list that displays
  3. Press once the center key of your navigation pad
    » the smiley code displays in the message area
  4. You can now include more emoticons or send your message.

Use quick text

Blocking a contact will result in preventing your contact from being able to initiate a conversation with you.

To block a contact of your list

  1. From the contact list, select the contact you want to block
  2. Select Options/Block/Unblock
    » A window opens asking you to confirm your command
  3. Click twice the center key of your navigation pad or select Options/Yes.
    » On the contact list, you now see a crossed out icon displayed before the name of your contact.

To unblock a contact of your list

  1. From the contact list, select the contact you want to unblock
  2. Select Options/Block/Unblock
    » A window opens asking you to confirm your command.
  3. Click twice the center key of your navigation pad or select Options/Yes.
    » On the contact list, you now see the previously crossed out icon (displayed before the name of your contact) had disappeared.

View a contact’s Profile

This feature enables you to view details about your contact such as his/her nickname, e-mail address and status.

To view a contact’s profile:

  1. From the contact list, select the contact you want to block
  2. Select Options/contact profile

Add/Remove a contact from your contacts list

Before you can initiate any chat session with a particular contact, you need to add him/her into your contact list. This command is only available from the contact list window:

To add a contact into your contact list:

  1. From the contact list, select Options/Add/Remove contact
  2. Select Add a contact
  3. Enter the e-mail address of your contact in the required field
  4. Select Options/Ok to confirm or just press twice the center key of your navigation pad.

To remove a contact from your contact list:

  1. From the contact list, select Options/Add/Remove contact
  2. Select Remove a contact
  3. Select Options/Ok to confirm or just press twice the center key of your navigation pad.

Set your presence status

This feature enables you to appear online, offline, busy, … on the contact list of your contacts.

  1. From the contact list, select Options/My presence
  2. Scroll down the list of presence options
  3. Press once the center key of your navigation pad or select Options/Ok
    » A window displays which confirms the presence status you have set for yourself.

Enabling bip sound for incoming messages

This feature can be directly accessed from the main menu, before you connect, or from the contact list after connection.

From the main Menu, select Settings
From the Settings window, select General Settings
Under Sound State, select On to enable the bip sound or Off to disable it.

Or,

From the contact list, select Options/Settings
Under Sound State, select On to enable the bip sound or Off to disable it.

Disconnecting from the network

From the contact list, click Close
» A window opens asking you to confirm disconnection from the server.
Select Options/Yes to confirm or press twice the center key of your navigation pad

Or,

You can select Options/Exit anytime, which will disconnect you and directly close your QuickIM application.

Warning to readers

This User Guide was written based on menu options and command names displayed on the Nokia 6670 device. Menu options and command names may vary from one device to the other and also according to various language settings. Though, we hope this guide will help you find and fully benefit from all QuickIM features.

About the software

The About section displays information about the software: name, version, software maker.

The About section is available from the main Menu, by selecting About.
